THIS YEAR: A transfer from Mesa State College in Colorado, junior Laurette Ortiz figures in a reserve role at the outset of the season ... Provides a good back-up to Paxton behind the plate ... Could see some time as a designated player or pinch runner. 

MESA STATE: Played 2 seasons for the highly successful NCAA Division II program at Mesa State, which posted a 81-19 record during Ortiz's time ... Was a 2-year starter at catcher, batting .282 in over 60 games with 7 home runs ... As a 2002 freshman, batted .303 with 14 doubles for the 50-12 Mavericks, who advanced to the NCAA regional playoffs. 

HIGH SCHOOL: Played 4 years of varsity softball for coach Mike Lindensmith at Rancho Cucamonga (Calif.) High School ... As a 2001 senior, earned All-Mt. Baldy League first team and All-CIF second team for the Cougars, who won the CIF championship ... Was a prep teammate of current Azusa Pacific players Trisha Rico and Courtney Cleaves.
