Biography

THIS YEAR: One of 5 seniors on the team, Cassie Lakey is coming off a breakthrough season in which she earned All-GSAC honors … Is the catalyst of the Cougar offense and predominantly bats lead-off … A slap hitter who uses her speed to get on base but can hit for power as well … Should be among conference leaders in stolen bases … Is returning to action after suffering torn knee ligament in the regional playoff game vs. Concordia … Will see most of her time in right field.

2002: Named All-GSAC after batting .426, which included a 13-game hitting streak in the middle of the season with several multiple-hit games … Hit safely in 34 of 39 games played … Is already second on Azusa Pacific career chart for stolen bases with 49, 20 of which she compiled during the 2002 season.

2001: Put together an excellent 2001 sophomore campaign which she batted a team-leading .362, second best in the GSAC … Also topped the team in stolen bases (15), fourth best in the GSAC … Hit safely in 31 of 45 games played, including career-best 5-game hitting streaks … Went 6-for-8 with 4 runs scored in a doubleheader sweep of traditional NAIA power William Woods … Was 4-for-8 in 3 postseason games.

2000: Saw action mostly as a pinch-runner, appearing in 43 games for the NAIA runner-up Cougars … Stole 14 bases in 16 attempts and scored 18 runs … Stole 4 bases and scored 3 runs in the postseason … Hit safely in 4 of her first 5 career at-bats.

HIGH SCHOOL: Lettered 2 years in basketball and 3 years in volleyball and softball at Kingsburg (Calif.) High School, from which she graduated in 1999 … Named All-League Catcher and Academic All-League 3 consecutive seasons (1997-99) … Selected team MVP her senior year … In volleyball named all-league first team MVP in 1998 … Voted best defense player in basketball her senior season.

PERSONAL: Born July 1, 1981, in Bakersfield, Calif., to Jim (Construction) and Linda (secretary) Lakey … Has 2 sisters (Christina and Sam) and a brother (Jimmie) … Involved in Fellowship of Christian Athletes … Majoring in psychology and would like to be a counselor.
