Biography

THIS YEAR: NAIA champion Brian Bernard seeks to close out his fine career listed among the great Azusa Pacific decathletes of all time … Is among the top 3 favorites to sweep the pentathlon (indoor) and decathlon (outdoor) crowns … Hoping to become the 15th Cougar to eclipse 7,000 points in the decathlon … Excels in the long and high jumps along with the pole vault. 

2005: Returned to Azusa Pacific after a 2-year absence and promptly captured in NAIA pentathlon crown at the indoor championships with a personal-record score of 3,731, the sixth best score in Azusa Pacific history … Joined Cougar greats Tage Peterson and Bryan Clay as an NAIA pentathlon champ … Was NAIA runner-up in the decathlon (6,680) after leading through the first 5 events … Qualified for the NAIA outdoor pole vault, finishing 12th (15’ 5”) … At the GSAC Championships, won the pole vault (14’ 1 1/2”) and finished second in the high jump (6’ 5”). 2002: Competed as a 2002 freshman on Azusa Pacific’s NAIA indoor and outdoor national championship teams … Won the GSAC decathlon title and was 12th at the NAIA outdoor championship meet … Posted a season-best of 5,933 points at the Mt. SAC Relays. 

CLACKAMAS CC: Spent 2 seasons at Clackamas Community College in Oregon City, Ore., where he redshirted the 2003 season … As a 2004 sophomore won the Chico Multi decathlon with a personal-record 6,792 points … Scored 28 1/4 points to lead Clackamas to a third-place finish in the NWAACC championship in Spokane, Wash., with top 5 finishes in the high hurdles (15.85), high jump (6’ 8”), pole vault (15’ 1”) and decathlon (6,679) … Named NWAACC MVP … Also posted season bests of 11.01 (100), 50.65 (400), 15.33 (110 HH), 23’ 2” (long jump). 

HIGH SCHOOL: Though home-schooled, athletically competed for Willamette High in Eugene, Ore., where he as a 2001 senior was the state runner-up in the high jump (6’ 8”) and was third in the 300 hurdles (39.41) … Set the school records in the pole vault (13’ 6”), high jump (6’ 8”) and decathlon (5855) … Was a 3-time district champion in the high jump and a 2-time champ in the long jump … Was second in the decathlon (6,481) at the 2001 USATF Junior Olympics in Sacramento. 

PERSONAL: Born April 12, 1983, in Tappanish, Wash., to Bob (pastor) and Kathy (finance) Bernard … Has 4 sisters (Krista, Becky, Andrea, Sarah) … Majoring in applied health … Would like to be a fire fighter … Currently volunteers in search and rescue operations … Enjoys mountain biking and hiking.
