THIS YEAR: As one of the team captains (along with Scott day), Derek Thornton moved in to starting role this year after filling in a key reserve role for most of the 1993 season … Started all 32 games and led the Cougars with 152 assists and was fourth in a GSAC with a 4.8 average … Enters the NAIA tournament playing the best basketball of his Azusa Pacific career … In the past 10 games is averaging 10.5 points and 5.4 assists while shooting .536 (37-for-69) from the floor … Tallied a season-high 18 points and scored 9 of the Cougars final 14 points, including 8 in overtime, in the Cougars 97-94 victory over defending NCAA Division II champion Cal State Bakersfield … Registered 13 points, nine rebounds and 8 assists in the Cougars’ victory over Point Loma Nazarene … Had a season-high 10 assists in a victory over then No. 17 NCAA Division II-ranked San Francisco State … Size and strength make him a postop possibility.
1993: As a 1993 junior, Thornton started the final six games, averaging 8.1 points and 4.2 assists … Scored a season high 23 points in a 90-77 victory over GSAC rival Westmont … Among Cougars who took more than 100 shots, Thornton led the team in field-goal percentage with a .535 clip (91-of-170) … Was a team leader in assists with 139 and was the top Cougar in 13 games, including the season-high 10 against Westmont in the NAIA district playoffs.
