The personable Terry Layton begins his third year on the Cougar athletics staff as an assistant to Cliff Hamlow.

A man of varied coaching experience, Layton returned to the West Coast after spending three seasons as a head coach in Oklahoma and Nebraska.

A graduate of Pasadena College (now Point Loma Nazarene College), Layton began his coaching duties in 1985 at Northwest Nazarene College in Nampa, Idaho  There he guided the Crusaders to three 20-win seasons and led the team to the NAIA District I finals six of the seven years he was at Northwest Nazarene.

In the summer of 1982 Layton assumed the head duties at Panhandle State University in Goodwell, Oklahoma.  In his one season at PSU, his Aggies captured 35 victories in 40 games.  For their effort they were crowned NAIA District IX champions and advanced to the 32-team NAIA National Tournament in Kansas City, Mo.

The following year Layton took the reigns of Nebraska Western, a junior college program that he coached two years before coming to Azusa Pacific in the summer of 1985.

A seasoned veteran of international competition, Layton has spend part of his past 11 summers touring with teams in over 20 foreign countries.  Through his connections, Layton has paved the way for several of his player to compete internationally.  Included among those "Layton-alumni" are former Cougars Darnell Fletcher (1985-86) and Michael Long (1985-87), who are currently playing in Argentina.

Terry and his wife, Nancy, reside in Glendora with their two daughters, Teralynn and Jamie.
