Steve Barnes begins his first year of coaching as an assistant to Cliff Hamlow and as the junior varsity coach. Barnes was a member of the 1979-80 Cougar team that was 25-10.
In his one season at Azusa Pacific, Barnes played in 35 games, scoring 328 points. He was second on the team in rebounds (202) and fourth in points. He possessed tremendous jumping ability and was noted for his hard-nosed, aggressive style of play which characterized the 1979-80 Cougar team.
Before coming to Azusa Pacific Barnes played two years at Citrus College and one year at Chico State, where he averaged 12.3 points a game. He currently is working on a bachelor's degree in physical education. He graduated from Arcadia High in 1975.
