Steve Barnes moves into his second year on the Cougar coaching staff. Barnes will serve as Lawrence's head assistant and as head coach for the junior varsity team.
A member of the 1979-80 Cougar team, Barnes scored 328 points in 35 games. He was second on the team in rebounds (202) and led the team in games played. During his time with the Cougars, Barnes was noted for his aggressive defense and his excellent jumping ability. He played the sixth man role for the Cougars, who won the NAIA District III Southern Division title.
Before coming to Azusa Pacific, Barnes played two years at Citrus College and one year at Chico State, where as a junior he averaged 12.3 points a game. Barnes completed his work for a bachelor's degree in 1982 from Azusa Pacific., He graduated from Arcardia (Calif.) High School in 1975.
