Gary Johnson also begins his first year of coaching as an assistant for the Cougar basketball team. Johnson graduated in 1980 and was also a member of the same Cougar that Jeff Golden and Steve Barnes played on.
In his two seasons at Azusa Pacific, Johnson led the team in assists with 192 in his junior year and 222 in his final year. The 414 assists places him fourth on the all-time Cougar assist list. In his senior year he scored 455 points which was second on the team. In his junior year he was voted the team MVP for his outstanding effort on the court. He came to Azusa Pacific by way of Long Beach City College where he guided the team to a conference co-championship.
Johnson graduated with a bachelor's degree in special education and is currently teaching at St. Francis High School in Pasadena.
