Biography
THIS YEAR: Azusa Pacific’s most physical player, junior center Brice Prather is 1 of 4 returning starters for the Cougars … Gives the Cougars a good inside game … Has quite an assortment of post moves and plays well both with his back to the basket and facing it … Should be a consistent and strong offensive weapon … Quite smart and understands the game very well.
2005: Started all 37 games he played as a 2005 sophomore … Was fourth on the team in scoring (10.0 avg.) and second in rebounding (6.8 avg.) … Was even stronger in GSAC play, averaging 11.1 points in conference action … Named NAIA All-Tournament after putting together an excellent 5-game stretch in Kansas City in which he averaged 11 points and 9.8 rebounds … Best game ever as a Cougar came in the NAIA semifinals when he tallied 17 points and 12 rebounds in a victory over Robert Morris … Tallied a career-high 13 rebounds against No. 1-ranked Mountain State in the NAIA Elite Eight game … Registered 12 points, 10 rebounds and 3 assists going head-to-head with NAIA Player of the Year Jarred Merrill in the Cougars’ second-round victory over Oklahoma Christian … Had 4 double-doubles on the season, including 2 in the NAIA Tourney … Enjoyed a 11-game stretch in mid-season in which he averaged 12.4 points
2004: Developed into a key reserve for the Cougars during his 2003 redshirt freshman season, averaging 12.5 minutes over the 35 games he played … Averaged 5.8 points and 3.3 rebounds … Was third on the team with 27 blocked shots … Had a season-high 16 points in a victory over Hope International … Best showing may have come in a victory over Vanguard in which he tallied 15 points on 6-for-7 shooting in just 18 minutes of play while grabbing 5 rebounds and blocking 2 shots.
2003: Began the year as a “recruited” walk-on at Cal-Berkeley but left 2 weeks into the year and transferred to Azusa Pacific … Attended classes and worked out with the team but did not play.
HIGH SCHOOL: Was a 2-sport standout at Villa Park (Calif.) High School in Orange County, where he earned All-Century League honors in both basketball and volleyball … As a 2002 senior in basketball, averaged 18.5 points, 9.4 rebounds and 2.8 blocks while earning All-CIF first team and Century League MVP honors … Scored a school-record 41 points in one game … As a 2001 junior averaged 10 points, 12 rebounds and 5 blocks for the 26-5 Spartans who advanced to the CIF semifinals … Was a member of Villa Park program that went 76-15 during his 3 years and advanced to at least the CIF quarterfinals each season … Villa Park also won 3 straight Century League titles, going 29-1 with Prather in league play … In volleyball, was All-Century League second team during his senior season and was named team MVP.
PERSONAL: Born Aug. 13, 1983, in Fullerton, Calif., to Mark (mortgage broker) and Mary Prather … Has 2 brothers (Chase, Blaine) and a sister (Courtney) … Married his high school sweetheart, Jenni Tortorea this past summer … Majoring in business … Given the Gene Autry Humanitarian Award for his community work.
