THIS YEAR: A 3-year role player, senior Steve Rodriguez may finally enjoy a breakthrough season . . . Early on is penciled in to compete for time as a third wide-out in Azusa Pacific's spread offense . . Runs good routes and smart about his position.

1997: Though appeared in 8 games, did not catch a pass and did not accumulate any all-purpose yards . . . Missed the Chapman game with a pulled muscle.

1996: Played sparingly in 8 games and did not catch a pass . . . Primary duties were on special teams.

1995: As a 1995 freshman caught 3 passes for 16 yards . . . Had 2 nabs for 10 yards in the Cougars' 41-14 victory over Whittier.

HIGH SCHOOL: Lettered in football and golf at El Rancho High in Pico Rivera, Calif. . . . Played 3 years of varsity football for Jim Patrico . . . Earned All-Del Rio League honors as a corner back following his 1994 senior season.

PERSONAL: Born Aug. 2, 1977, in Montebello, Calif., to George and Stella Rodriguez . . . Majoring in social science and hopes to teach and coach.
