Biography

THIS YEAR: One of the top defenders in the NAIA, All-American senior Steve Holte anchors what should be one of the nation's top defense … Quite strong and very smart about the game … A natural leader and playmaker … Has never missed a game and has started 33 consecutive contests … Looking to become only the fourth Cougar ever to earn back-to-back All-America first team recognition (Christian Okoye, Ross Ritter and Dexter Davis are the others).

2004: Named NAIA All-American first-team (15th first-teamer in program history) after leading Azusa Pacific for the third straight year in tackling (99) … Teamed with fellow All-American Peder Moore to pace a defense that held the foe to a school-record low 9.6 points per game and just 212 yards of total offense (third best in the NAIA) … Was a key a figure in a Cougar defense that yielded just 2 TDs in 3 NAIA playoff games … Tallied 16 tackles for loss, including 5 sacks, to go along with 5 pass deflections, 4 fumble recoveries, Recorded a career-high tying 11 tackles in the season-opener vs. San Diego … Best effort may have come against Humboldt State when he recorded 10 tackles which included 2.5 sacks … At Western New Mexico, led Cougars back from a 2 TD deficit and a victory by spearheading a defense that held Mustangs to just 31 yards total offense in the second half while he accumulated 9 tackles, including 3 for loss … Collected his first collegiate interception in a victory over Chapman, picking off an errant pass at the Cougar 8-yard line to keep the Panthers from getting into the end zone for the entire game.

2003: For the second straight year led the team in tackles with 71 (28 solo), which included 4 for loss … Was an integral piece of one of the finest defenses in Cougar history, a unit that allowed just 88 rushing yards a game, program best since 1988 … Opened with a then career-high 10 tackles in a victory at San Diego … Finished off the campaign with a new career-high 11 tackles (6 solo) in the NAIA playoff game at Mary … Led the team with 3 forced fumbles, including 2 at Humboldt State in which he also recorded 9 tackles. 

2002: Put together the finest season ever by a Cougar freshman defender, leading the team with 59 tackles while starting all 9 games … Had 4 tackles for loss, including 2.5 sacks … Has a season-high 11 tackles in the triple OT victory at Pacific Lutheran … Best effort may have come in the victory at Chapman, registering 8 tackles, including 10-yard sack, and forced a fumble that led to a TD … Had 9 tackles vs. Gustavus Adolphus.

2001: Attended classes at Azusa Pacific and practiced with the team but did not play in any games.

HIGH SCHOOL: Was an All-Iowa second team honoree at Valley High in West Des Moines, Iowa, during his senior campaign after tallying 114 tackles (57 solo) that were complimented by 2 interceptions and 2 fumble recoveries … Led the Tigers to a combined 31-4 record and 3 state playoff berth, including 2 semifinal appearances … As a 1999 junior led Valley to a 12-1 record and the state 4A semifinals … Twice named All-Central Iowa Metro League first team … Recorded 224 tackles in his 3-year prep career … Also lettered in soccer (member of the 2001 state championship team) and track (shot).

PERSONAL: Born June 4, 1982, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Jerry Holte and Mona Butters … Has 2 brothers (Mark, who played football at the University of Northern Colorado, and David) … Majoring in graphic design with a minor in Spanish … Has been on mission trips to Venezuela and Hungary … Member of the national honor society.
