Biography

THIS YEAR: An outstanding athlete with uncanny field vision, senior Shane Minton moves to fulltime tailback after pulling double-duty on both sides of the line last year … Noted for his aggressiveness, strength and quickness … Could press national honors … Will not play defense this year.

2000: Arrived at Azusa Pacific as an accomplished safety but by midseason discovered additional success as a running back … Appeared in 9 of the Cougars' 10 games (missed Southern Oregon with a concussion), starting 7, all on defense … Was fourth on the team in tackles with 50 (41 solo) … Also had 3 interceptions, 6 pass deflections, 1 fumble recovery and 1 blocked kick … Four games into the season tried his hand at running back, a position he hadn't played since his 1997 senior season in high school, and responded with a dazzling performance, rushing for 106 yards and 3 TDs (24, 20 and 18 yards) on just 8 carries (13.3 avg.) to lead the Cougars to a 50-36 victory over Redlands … In that same game, also had a season-high 9 tackles and his first interception of the season … Two weeks later, he followed with a 117-yard rushing performance on just 13 carries (9.0 avg.) and scored 1 TD in the Cougars' 54-51 victory at Cal Lutheran … Had 4 tackles, including a sack, and a pass deflection in that game … Focused on his defensive play over the final third of the season, carrying the ball just 3 times in the final 3 games … Had 2 second-half interceptions and 2 pass break ups vs. Menlo.

JUNIOR COLLEGE: Played 2 seasons at defensive back for national power Long Beach (Calif.) City College … As a 1999 sophomore earned All-Mission Conference first team recognition after tallying 67 tackles (40 solo) that included 3 sacks … Had team highs of 4 fumble recoveries and 2 interceptions … As a 1998 freshman, appeared in 9 games for the 10-1 Vikings, recording 31 tackles (22 solo) and 3 fumble recoveries.

HIGH SCHOOL: Prepped at St. John Bosco High in Bellflower, Calif., from which he graduated in 1998 … Played 3 seasons of varsity football and baseball (outfield) … Was an All-CIF first team pick as a running back and was named Del Rey League MVP during his senior season.

PERSONAL: Born Oct. 25, 1979, in Garden Grove, Calif., to Michael (police officer) and Debbie Minton … Majoring in physical education … Wants to teach and coach.
