Biography

THIS YEAR: All-American candidate Scott Thomas anchors a solid set of defensive backs . . . Starts at strong safety but can play all 4 positions . . . Excellent defender with good field vision . . . Strong against the run but also very good at limiting an aerial game . . . No nonsense type of player . . . Should be among team leaders in tackles and perhaps national leaders in interceptions.

1997: Started all 9 games . . . Was third on the team with 61 tackles, including 37 solo . . . Led the team 5 interceptions . . . Tallied a season-high 14 tackles (8 solo) at Cal State Northridge . . . Had another 10 tackles at Occidental . . . Best overall game though came at La Verne when he tallied 8 tackles and intercepted 3 passes, including one on the final play of the game that he returned 50 yards for a TD to clinch a 23-14 Cougar win . . . Was named NAIA National Player of the Week for his play against La Verne . . . The following week thwarted a fourth-quarter Whittier drive by picking off a pass in the end zone . . . Recorded 3 tackles for loss, all against Occidental.

JUNIOR COLLEGE: Played 1 season at Long Beach City College with current Cougar Jack Williams . . . Earned All-Mission Conference first team as a 1996 sophomore, after leading the Vikings with 5 interceptions . . . Was fourth with 46 tackles . . . LBCC finished the season with an 8-3 record and a berth into the Shrine Potato Bowl . . . Played his freshman season at Cerritos (Calif.) College.

HIGH SCHOOL: Prepped at Brethren Christian High from which he graduated in 1993 . . . Lettered in football, basketball and baseball . . . Earned All-CIF and all-conference honors in football.

PERSONAL: Born Jan. 31, 1975 . . . Son of Richard and Teri Thomas.
