Biography

THIS YEAR: Senior Rocky Jackson is the standout of the Cougar secondary . . . Considered an excellent athlete with good speed and instincts . . . Rated a good coverage player . . . Can play at cornerback as well . . . Will be among team leaders in interceptions . . . Very knowledgeable about the game.

1996: Started all 10 games at free safety . . . Made 52 tackles (15 solo), including 1 behind the line of scrimmage . . . Had 5 pass deflections and was second on the team with 4 interceptions . . . Recovered 1 fumble (vs. Cal Lutheran which 2 plays later was turned into a Cougar TD) . . . Had a season-high 9 tackles vs. Humboldt State . . . Also tallied 7 tackles vs. Occidental and Chapman . . . Had 2 pass deflections and a pair of interceptions in the win at Whittier.

JUNIOR COLLEGE: Played the 1994 and 1995 seasons for John Featherstone at El Camino Community College in Torrance, Calif. . . . Was a member of a Warrior program that went 17-6 during his 2 years, including 10-2 during his freshman season when he was a part-time starter . . . Had an interception each season, returning one 27 yards for a TD vs. Palomar as a sophomore . . . Suffered a recurring knee injury during his sophomore year, tearing inside cartilage (suffered same injury in high school) . . . Played in a bowl game both years. HIGH SCHOOL: Was a 3-way standout at North Torrance High in Torrance, Calif. . . . As a 1993 senior started at quarterback, cornerback and punter and led the 6-5 Saxons to the Pioneer League championship . . . Earned All-CIF recognition . . . Named All-South Bay by the Los Angeles Times and the South Bay Daily Breeze . . . Also named Pioneer League MVP after accounting for 17 TDs by throwing for 1,962 yards and rushing for another 225 . . . On defense, picked off 7 passes and returned 1 for a TD . . . As a 1992 junior, passed for 175 yards, rushed for 37 yards and intercepted 4 passes for the 10-2 Saxons . . . Played for Tony Uruburu . . . Also lettered in basketball during his senior year.

PERSONAL: Born Rahsaan Jackson on Aug. 7, 1976, in Carson, Calif. . . . Physical education major . . . Would like to go into sports medicine.

SHEALY ON JACKSON: "A free safety has a lot of the same responsibilities as a quarterback in that he has to make sure that everyone gets lined up. Rock is that guy for our defense. Rocky adds a lot to our campus in the way he mixes and mingles. We recruited him because he is a great defensive back and we knew he would fit in at Azusa Pacific."
