Biography

THIS YEAR: One of the Cougars' top returning defenders, senior Oscar Burgueno looks to improve to upon a fine 1997 campaign . . . Has great quickness and quite strong . . . Difficult to block . . . Teams with Baker and Basiger to give the Cougars' an excellent pass rush . . . Will push for postseason honors.

1997: Started all 9 games in his first season as a Cougar . . . Was fourth on the team with 49 tackles (19 solo) and second with 5.5 sacks . . . Enjoyed a monster game in the Cougars' 20-14 win over Whittier, tallying a season-high 11 tackles, (6 solo) that included a 4 sacks (minus-25 yards), a season-best among all Cougars.

JUNIOR COLLEGE: Played 2 years at Cerritos College in Norwalk, Calif. . . . As a 1996 sophomore, was named All-Mission Conference after leading the Falcons to a 9-2 record and a victory in the Strawberry Bowl (16-15 over Moorpark) . . . Set a school season record with 14 sacks, including a personal-best 4 vs. El Camino . . . Twice named conference player of the week . . . Was also a team captain . . . As a 1995 sophomore played linebacker for the 5-4-1 Falcons and was the team's third leading tackler with 65 . . . Tallied a season-best 14 tackles vs. Riverside City.

HIGH SCHOOL: Prepped at Schurr High in Montebello, Calif. . . . Lettered 3 years on the varsity level at linebacker and running back . . . Was team captain as a 1994 senior when he was named Los Angeles Times All Southeast, All-Almont League and team defensive MVP after posting 112 tackles . . . Had a career-high 19 tackles vs. Bell Gardens . . . Scored 4 TDs on the season . . . As a 1993 junior was all-league and the team's second leading tackler with 95 . . . Started at linebacker as a 1992 sophomore, posting 65 tackles, third best on the team.

PERSONAL: Born March 4, 1977, in Los Angeles, Calif., to Freddy and Hermelinda Burgueno . . . Is 1 of 3 sons . . . Majoring in business administration.
