Biography

THIS YEAR: One of the premier down-linemen in the NAIA, All-American Nick Tavaglione anchors a terrific defensive front that should create pressure on opposing quarterbacks while stuffing the run … Has great strength and a reputation for getting to the opposing quarterback … Very quick … Will probably draw double-team attention. 

2002: Put together an outstanding 2002 junior year, becoming the highest honored Cougar defensive lineman since 1988 … Named NAIA All-American second team after assembling 46 tackles, which included a team-high 18 for loss, among which were 10 QB sacks (most by a Cougar since 1995) … Made quite an impact in his Cougar debut, tallying 9 tackles in the victory over San Diego, which included 3 sacks, more than any Cougar amassed the prior season … Named NAIA national player of the week for his effort … Registered 9 tackles against Southern Oregon … In the overtime win at Pacific Lutheran, had 6 tackles with a sack and 2 forced fumbles. 

EASTERN WASHIGTON: Spent the 2001 campaign at NCAA Division I-AA Eastern Washington in Spokane, where he earned a starting berth … Prior to season-opener suffered the second compression fracture of his back in less than a year and was forced to sit out the season. 

JUNIOR COLLEGE: Played 2 seasons at Riverside (Calif.) Community College where he tallied over 30 quarterback sacks for his career … As a 2000 sophomore, set the school record with 17.5 sacks and as a result earned All-American and all-state honors for his play. 

UC DAVIS: Redshirted his first season at UC Davis. 

HIGH SCHOOL: Played 3 seasons of varsity football at Riverside Poly where he was a 2-time All-Ivy League pick … As a 1997 senior, named Ivy League MVP … Also spent 2 years competing in track & field (shot put and discus throw) 

PERSONAL: Born Jan. 3, 1980, in Riverside, Calif., to Nick Tavaglione (contractor) and Kris Alzado … Has 1 sister (Cara) … Majoring in sociology
