THIS YEAR: Senior Mike Nienaber returns to football after a 3-year layoff … Figures in a back-up role at cornerback … Has to work off the rust of a long layoff … Has been attending classes at Azusa Pacific the past 3 years. 

1999: Walked on at Azusa Pacific and redshirted the season, which was also Peter Shinnick's first as the Cougar mentor. 

HIGH SCHOOL: Played 2 seasons of varsity football at Bellevue (Wash.) High, playing both wide receiver and defensive back … Also lettered 1 season in basketball (forward) and ran 3 seasons of track & field. 

PERSONAL: Born Dec. 11, 1980, in Snohomish, Wash., to Paul (landscaper) and Debbie (deli manager) … Has 2 brothers (Nathanael, who attended Azusa Pacific, and Tim) and a sister (Jessica) … His uncle, Mark Nienaber, ran track & field at Azusa Pacific … His cousin, Michelle Nienaber, was a member of Azusa Pacific's nationally-ranked women's soccer program in 1997.
