Biography

THIS YEAR: Senior Justin Duarte, playing only his second season of college football, is coming off an extraordinary year and is now primed as one of the Cougars' top offensive weapons . . . Quite competitive and strong . . . Has excellent hands but is also a hard-nosed blocker.

1997: Returned to the gridiron for the first time since his 1993 senior year in high school . . . Put together a surprisingly good season, coming on strong toward the end . . . Appeared in all 9 games, starting the final 5 in a row . . . Was third on the team with 18 receptions, 14 of which came in the final 5 games . . . Nabbed a season-high 6 receptions for 68 yards and a 9-yard TD strike in the Cougars' 20-14 win over Whittier . . . His first collegiate reception was a 9-yard TD catch vs. Hardin-Simmons . . . Had 3 catches for 59 yards vs. Central Washington, including a season-best 33-yard nab.

BASEBALL: Has made quite a name for himself on the diamond . . . Is a 3-year letterman of the Cougar baseball and is coming off one of the finest seasons ever for a Cougar catcher . . . Was named NAIA All-American honorable mention, NAIA All-Far West Regional and All-Golden State Athletic Conference after leading the Cougars to the 1998 NAIA Far West Regional with team-highs in batting average (.429), home runs (20) and RBIs (school-record 69) . . . May have a future in baseball beyond his days at Azusa Pacific.

HIGH SCHOOL: Was a 2-sport standout at Charter Oak High in Covina, Calif. . . . In football, was a 1993 All-Miramonte League second team pick at tight end after collecting 16 catches and averaging over 10 yards a reception . . . In baseball, was also an All-Miramonte pick and team MVP during his senior season.

PERSONAL: Born Sept. 14, 1976, in Los Angeles, Calif., to Ricardo and Sandra Duarte . . . Graduated from Azusa Pacific last May with a bachelor's degree in physical education and a minor in history . . . Currently working on his teaching credential . . . Wants to teach and coach.
