Biography

THIS YEAR: Originally a starter by default, junior John van den Raadt has developed into one of the most unique quarterbacks in Azusa Pacific history ... Considered a throwback to QBs of decades ago in that he can both throw the ball and run with it ... Is very smart and is loaded with college experience ... Has started 18 consecutive games entering the 2010 season ... Is the only Cougar QB ever to throw for over 3,000 yards and rush for over 500 (the most rushing yards by a Cougar QB in 4 decades) ... Is currently eighth on Azusa Pacific's all-time chart with 3,650 yards in total offense and by season's end could become only the second Cougar ever to tally over 5,000 yards of total offense ... Should push for postseason honors.

2009 (sophomore): Put together a fine 2009 season in which he started all 11 games and came on strong over the final month of the season ... Threw for nearly 1,800 yards and 8 TDs ... Also rushed for 439 yards, second-best on the team and the most by a Cougar QB since Russ Carroll's 600 in 1969 ... Averaged a team-high 5.5 yards per rush ... Enjoyed a career-best game in the victory at Trinity University in which he completed 16-of-21 passes for 299 yards and 3 TDs while rushing for 114 yards on 12 carries and scoring another 3 TDs on the ground ... Had a hand in 413 of the Cougars' season-high 535 yards of total offense and became the first Cougar QB since 1993 to rush for 100 yards in a game ... Over the final 2 games of the season, both Cougar victories, was 34-for-56 passing for 522 yards and 4 TDs against just 1 interception ... In fact, threw just 3 of his 9 picks over the last 5 games ... Also rushed for 88 yards against Humboldt State ... Was 22-for-33 for 245 yards and no interceptions in the Cougars' first win of the season, a 23-7 decision over Wisconsin-Stevens Point ... Of his 8 TD strikes, 6 went to Matt Davis ... Of the 12 TDs he had a hand in, 6 covered more than 30 yards in length ... Was sacked just 8 times in 287 pass plays and 11 games ... His 1,799 passing yards were the tenth best single-season total in Azusa Pacific history and his 150 pass completions were ninth best.

2008 (freshman): Was expected to redshirt his 2008 freshman season but was forced into action by the second game of the season when season-ending injuries felled Aaron Strazicich and back-up Rodney Trimm ... Started the final 7 games and finished with 1,327 yards by completing 116-of-220 passes ... Had 7 TD tosses against 11 interceptions ... Made his first collegiate start in week 4 vs. Wisconsin-La Crosse and led the Cougars to a 13-10 victory, their first of the season, to join Dain Strobel (1991) as the only Cougar true-freshman QBs to win their first starts at Azusa Pacific ... Was the first Cougar true-freshman to start at QB since 1994 (Ben Focke) ... Came on strong over the final 3 games of the season, completing 48-of-89 (.539) passes for 536 yards and 4 TDs against just 1 interception ... Was 19-for-29 for 245 yards and a career-high 3 TDs (9-, 46-, 14-yards) in a regular-season-ending victory over East Texas Baptist ... Best game may have come on the road against NCAA Division II Humboldt State when he completed a career-high 21-of-36 passes for a career-high 282 yards ... Because of the Cougars' sudden lack of depth at QB, had to curtail his running and yet rushed for 175 yards (without 11 sacks) and 1 TD on 38 carries (4.6 avg.) ... Scored his lone rushing TD on a 14-yard scamper that gave the Cougars a 13-6 lead against Dixie State in the second quarter.

HIGH SCHOOL: Played 2 seasons of varsity football as a wide receiver and quarterback for head coach Dave Pierson at Jurupa Valley High in Mira Loma, Calif. ...
