Biography

THIS YEAR: The burly Jon Puente is a key returnee on the Cougar offensive front . . . Teams with former JC colleague Robert Purcell as the cornerstones of an offensive line that is one of best-ever in Azusa Pacific history . . . Should be a vital figure in the Cougar running game.

1996: Enjoyed a fine debut junior season with Azusa Pacific . . . Started all 10 games at left guard . . . Was a key reason the Cougars rushed for over 2,000 yards as a team.

JUNIOR COLLEGE: Played 2 seasons at Rancho Santiago Community College in Santa Ana, Calif. . . . Was a member of program that posted a 15-7 record in his 2 seasons . . . Started all 11 games for the 6-5 Dons during his 1995 sophomore campaign . . . Best game was a 92% grade against Chaffey (Calif.) Community College in the Inland Empire Bowl . . . As a 1994 freshman, was a part-time starter for the 9-2 Dons who won the Mission Conference title and finished the season ranked No. 12 in the nation and No. 5 in the state.

HIGH SCHOOL: Played for head coach Terry Henigan at Irvine (Calif.) High where he was a member of 2 CIF championship teams . . . As a 1993 senior, started all games at tackle, leading the Vaqueros to a 13-1 record and a CIF championship victory over Canyon Springs High . . . As a 1992 junior, was a back-up for another 13-1 Irvine team that won the CIF crown (the Vaqueros went 26-2 during his 2 seasons on varsity) . . . Played on the sophomore team in 1991 but was called up to varsity for the playoffs as Irvine won the first of 3 straight CIF titles . . . Also lettered in lacrosse.

PERSONAL: Born Sept. 10, 1976, in Long Beach, Calif., to Pabloa and Belinda Puente . . . His brother Joseph also played football at Rancho Santiago.
