Biography

THIS YEAR: One of 6 veteran defensive lineman who return to his post, senior Joel McGivney will push for a starting berth . . . Gives the Cougars great depth and talent along the defensive front . . . Plays well against the run and provides a good pass rush. . . Has good quickness for his size and has a nose for the ball.

1997: Appeared in 9 games last year, starting the final 7 . . . Tallied 26 tackles (6 solo), including 4.5 for loss . . . Also had 2 sacks for a loss of 14 yards. . . . Had a season-high 5 tackles in 3 different games (Hardin-Simmons, Cal State Northridge and Whittier).

1996: Switched to defense and played in only 5 games (all as a reserve) as a 1996 sophomore but came on strong toward the end of the season . . . Collected 9 of his 12 tackles in the final 3 games . . . Had a season-high 6 tackles, including 2 for loss, vs. Chapman . . . In the Cougar win at Menlo, had a tackle for loss, a sack and forced a fumble.

1995: Played in very limited role at offensive guard but appeared in every game playing special teams as a 1995 freshman.

HIGH SCHOOL: Prepped at Big Bear High in the California mountain resort of Big Bear City . . . As a 1994 senior was named All De Anza League first team at offensive guard . . . Was also named the Big Bear lineman of the year . . . Was an key part of Big Bear's 1995 DeAnza League championship team . . . As a 1992 sophomore played on Big Bear's CIF Championship team.

PERSONAL: Born April 2, 1977, in Philadelphia, Pa. . . . Majoring in sociology . . . Married Nichole Combs, an Azusa Pacific student, this past June 13.
