Biography

THIS YEAR: Perhaps Azusa Pacific's best returning defensive player, senior Jason Gregory is a strong, fast and dominating outside linebacker . . . An impact player who changes games with big plays . . . Known for his ability to put heat on opposing quarterbacks and chase down receivers . . . Smart about the game and dedicated to it . . . Hard-nosed player . . . A good student and a potential NAIA All-Scholar honoree.

1996: Assembled a fine 1996 junior campaign in which he recorded 69 tackles, including 25 solo . . . Tallied a team-best 7 sacks for a loss of 43 yards and another pair of tackles for loss . . . Deflected 5 passes, tops among Cougar linebackers . . . Had a monster game at Whittier in which he recorded a career-high 14 tackles (7 solo), including 3 sacks, one that forced a fumble the Cougars turned into a TD . . . Also against Whittier, nabbed his only interception of the season and returned it 43 yards for a TD just before the half to give the Cougars a 24-13 lead . . . Had 7 tackles and a sack in each of the first 2 games of the season (vs. La Verne and Humboldt State).

1995: Appeared in all 9 games, starting the final 7 in a row . . . Had 25 tackles (11 solo), including 4.5 for loss and a team-high 4 QB sacks for minus-45 yards . . . Forced a pair of fumbles . . . Had 3 or more tackles in 7 games.

HUMBOLDT STATE: Played his 1994 freshman season at Humboldt State, an NCAA Division II program that posted an 8-2 record . . . Collected 20 tackles (4 solo), including 1 for loss, and 1 pass deflection . . . Initially came off the bench but started the final 7 games and became the first true freshman in 10 years to start for the Lumberjacks.

HIGH SCHOOL: Prepped at Rancho Bernardo High in San Diego, Calif. . . . As a 1993 senior, led Rancho Bernardo to a 13-1 record and the CIF San Diego Section title (beat Poway, 7-3) . . . Made the game-winning and title-clinching hit when he separated a receiver from the ball as Poway went for the game-winning TD on fourth down with 20 seconds left in the game at Jack Murphy Stadium . . . Named CIF Defensive Player of the Year with more than 130 tackles and 3 interceptions in 14 games . . . Was also named All-CIF and All-Palomar League first team . . . A part-time starter at fullback, but was primarily a blocking back, carrying the ball less than 5 times. . . Granted the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame Scholar-Athlete Award . . . As a 1992 junior, won All-Palomar League honors for the 4-6 Broncos . . . Played 2 seasons of junior varsity baseball.

PERSONAL: Born Jan. 24, 1976, in San Diego, Calif., to Richard and Sherry Gregory . . . Physical education major . . . Wants to teach and coach at the high school level.
