Biography

THIS YEAR: A silent and often over-looked weapon within the Cougar arsenal, senior James Hartford is a talented, bruising fullback who teams with Elijah Raphael to give Azusa Pacific a complete running attack . . . Quick for his size . . . Very hard-hitting and doesn't go down easy . . . Rated an outstanding blocker and a good receiver out of the backfield . . . If necessary, could easily fill role of being the primary ball carrier . . . Could rush for over 423 yards, the most ever by a Cougar FB (Bob Jenkins, 1984). 1996: Had a fine debut season at Azusa Pacific, appearing in all 10 games, starting 8 of them . . . Rushed for 234 yards (the most by a Cougar FB in 4 years) on 59 carries (4.0 avg.) . . . Caught 17 passes for 146 yards . . . Scored 3 TDs, 2 rushing, 1 receiving . . . Best game came at Whittier, rushing for a team-high 69 yards on 11 carries, scoring 1 TD.

JUNIOR COLLEGE: Played 2 seasons for Gene Murphy at Fullerton (Calif.) City College . . . As a 1995 sophomore named K-Swiss Bowl game MVP . . . Led the Hornets to a 7-3-1 record . . . Tabbed Fullerton City Freshman Offensive Player of the Year in 1994 when the Hornets posted a 3-7 mark . . . Redshirted the 1993 campaign.

HIGH SCHOOL: Prepped at Troy High in Fullerton where he lettered 4 years in varsity soccer and 2 years in varsity football . . . Was a 2-time football team MVP and a 2-time All-Freeway League first team pick . . . Named team captain during his 1992 senior season . . . Was also a 2-time All-Freeway League selection in soccer.

PERSONAL: Born Aug. 19, 1974, in Fullerton, Calif., to Floyd and Sharon Hartford . . . His brother, Chad, is also attending Azusa Pacific . . . Majoring in applied health.
