Biography

THIS YEAR: One of the most experienced Cougars on the offense, third-year quarterback J.D. Fox figures to battle sophomore Bryan Lucas for the starting position they shared a year ago . . . A good QB who gets the most out of his body . . . Has a strong will and desire to win . . . A tough player and a natural leader.

1996: Appeared in all 10 games, starting 8 . . . Completed 95-of-176 passes (54% completion and flirted with the school record of 59.7% for awhile) for 1,305 yards (seventh best season yards in Cougar history) . . . Connected on 12 TD strikes and was intercepted just 6 times . . . In his initial collegiate start, led Azusa Pacific to one of the biggest upsets in school history, an 18-12 verdict over La Verne (snapping Leos' 21-game win streak) in which he hit Elijah Raphael on a 37-yard TD strike with 5:12 left in the game, all part of a 16-for-25 performance for 199 yards . . . As a result, named San Gabriel Valley Tribune Area College Player of the Week . . . Suffered a dislocated jaw in the second game of the season vs. Humboldt State and sat out the entire second half but was able to return the following week vs. Whittier . . . Was 19-for-36 for 219 yards and 2 TDs vs. San Diego . . . Known as a "big play QB," 8 of his 12 TD strikes covered 35 yards or more, including a school-record catch-and-run 92-yard hook-up with Darryl Nolan vs. Whittier (also had an 80-yarder to Nolan and a 66-yarder to Jay Mayo).

1995: Played his first live action of football since his 1992 high school senior season . . . Appeared in 3 games, all off the bench . . . Completed 6-of-11 passes for 104 yards with 1 TD and an interception . . . Against Menlo, was 4-for-6 for 87 yards, which included a 75-yard TD strike to Darryl Nolan.

1994: Enrolled in classes at Rio Hondo Community College in Whittier, Calif., but did not play football . . . Was the QB coach at San Gabriel (Calif.) High, assisting then head coach and former Cougar Gary Gonzalez . . . Was head coach of the junior varsity team, leading it to an 8-2 record.

ARIZONA STATE: Was a walk-on QB at Arizona State in 1993 . . . Did not play a down for the Sun Devils and redshirted the season.

HIGH SCHOOL: Was a 2-sport standout at Arcadia (Calif.) High . . . As a 1992 senior was team MVP after throwing for over 1,200 yards and rushing for another 600 . . . Led the Apaches to a 6-5 record and the CIF playoffs where they lost to eventual champion Los Alamitos High (he had a 65-yard TD run in that game). . . As a 1991 junior, started the final 4 games of the season in which the Apaches went 3-1, losing in the first round of the CIF playoffs to Ventura High . . . Was also a 3-time team MVP in track & field . . . Holds the school record in the 300m hurdles (39.7) . . . Had other personal bests of 14.8 in the 110m high hurdles and 6-2 in the high jump.

PERSONAL: Born Jeffrey Darren Fox on Aug. 27, 1974, in Glendale, Calif., to Russ and Linda Fox . . . Majoring in social science with an emphasis in history . . . Wants to teach and coach on the high school level.

SHEALY ON FOX: "J.D.'s a great competitor. His heart is as big as that football he is throwing. He doesn't do everything the way its drawn it on the chalkboard, but he does a lot of good things and he's a guy who steps up."
