THIS YEAR: One of 3 new quarterbacks in the Cougar system, senior Geoff Buffum figures to battle for a starting assignment . . . Probably has the strongest arm of all the Cougar QBs . . . Is a natural leader . . . Smart about he game . . . Is coming off a year layoff and will have to work off the rust . . . Is 1 of 5 former San Clemente High players currently with the Cougars.

LINFIELD: Played his 1996 junior season at NAIA power Linfield College in McMinnville, Ore. . . . Appeared in 4 games, completing 28-of-55 passes for 312 yards and 1 TD with 3 interceptions.

WILLAMETTE: Played his first 2 seasons at Willamette University in Salem, Ore. . . . As a 1995 sophomore, appeared in 6 games as a back-up, completing 11-of-19 passes for 144 yards, a pair of TDs and 1 interception for the 6-2-1 Bearcats who finished ranked 18th in the NAIA . . . As a 1994 freshman, appeared in 7 games, completing 29-of-61 passes for 471 yards, 6 TDs, including an 86-yard strike, and 7 interceptions for the 7-2 Bearcats.

HIGH SCHOOL: Played for Mark McElroy at San Clemente (Calif.) High where he lettered 2 years on the varsity level . . . As a 1993 senior led the Tritons to a 9-3 record and their first CIF playoff appearance in 14 years . . . Earned All-South Coast League honorable mention after throwing for 1,200 yards and 12 TDs with 6 interceptions . . . Played in just 1 game as a 1992 junior, completing 4-of-6 passes for 71 vs. national power Mater Dei.

PERSONAL: Born June 27, 1976, in Laguna Beach, Calif., to Austin and Lesley Buffum . . . Is the oldest of 3 children . . . Studying political science . . . Wants to teach and coach football on the high school level.
