Biography

THIS YEAR: Senior Elbert Baker is a hard-hitting big-play type of player who is a noticeable force on the Cougar defense . . . Is one of the top leaders of the defense . . . Versatile athlete with good speed and should be among team leaders in sacks . . . Will push for postseason honors . . . Already eighth on the Cougars' all-time tackle list and needs 52 more to become only the fourth Cougar to reach the 200 tackle plateau. 

1997: Started all 9 games at outside linebacker . . . Was second on the team with 79 tackles, including 9.5 for loss . . . Tallied 3.5 QB sacks . . . Had 9 or more tackles in 6 games . . . Collected a career-high 12 tackles, including a sack and another tackle for loss, in the Cougars' 23-14 win at La Verne . . . Had 9 tackles, including 7 solo, in a 28-14 win at Occidental. 

1996: Started all 9 games he played at outside linebacker (missed the Occidental game) . . . Had 50 tackles, including 4 for loss and a sack . . . Registered a season-high 9 tackles in games vs. Chapman and Redlands . . . Also had 2 tackles for a loss of 21 yards vs. Redlands . . . Posted 8 tackles in the win over La Verne in which the Cougar defense limited the Leos to just 3.8 yards a play . . . Had 1 interception on the year but it was one of the Cougars' biggest defensive plays, returning the pick 60 yards for a TD as time expired on the first half to give the Cougars a 12-7 halftime lead at Chico State (the Cougars eventually won 22-21).

1995: Appeared in all 9 games as a 1995 freshman reserve and special teams player . . . Recorded 19 tackles (9 solo), forced a fumble, deflected a pass, and picked off another, returning it 14 yards vs. Occidental. HIGH SCHOOL: Graduated from Monrovia (Calif.) High in 1995 . . . Played 2 seasons of varsity football . . . As a 1995 senior, named All-Rio Hondo League first team and team MVP after leading the team in tackles (98) and interceptions (4) . . . Also played wide receiver and was captain of the 6-4 Wildcats . . . Started all 10 games at free safety as a 1993 junior . . . Had 2 picks for the 4-6 Wildcats.

PERSONAL: Born March 30, 1977, in Los Angeles . . . Younger brother Earvin is a freshman on the Cougar football team.
