Biography

THIS YEAR: The athletically-gifted David Canales returns to the Cougar receiver corps after 2 frustrating seasons of nagging injuries that limited him to just 1 game appearance … Has good size and excellent speed … If at full strength, figures to press for starting duties and be among the Cougars' top 4 receivers. 

2002: Appeared in just 1 game (vs. Humboldt State). 

2001: Redshirted the 2001 campaign while attending classes at Azusa Pacific. 

2000: Played in 7 games, all in reserve, collecting 7 receptions for 40 yards … Had 4 catches for 24 yards in the season-opener at San Diego … Also returned 1 kickoff for 9 yards. 1999: As a 1999 true freshman, appeared in 7 games, all in reserve, while making the adjustment to not only the college game but also to wide receiver … Made 1 catch, a 45-yarder vs. Chapman in the regular-season finale. 

HIGH SCHOOL: Was an All-Southern Pacific League quarterback and defensive back at Carson (Calif.) High … As a 1998 senior, earned all-league first team honors after accounting for 13 TDs (8 throwing, 5 rushing) … As a 1997 junior was named all-league first team as a free safety after setting a school record in tackles for DBs at 149 … Also played 2 years of shortstop and first base on the Colt baseball team and ran 1 season of track … Graduated with a 3.85 GPA. 

PERSONAL: Born May 7, 1981, in Harbor City, Calif., to Isaac and Ritha Canales … Has 2 brothers (Josh and Jacob) … Josh was an All-Pac 10 second baseman at UCLA and is currently in the Houston Astros system … Majoring in applied health … Would like to go on to medical school … Likes to read.
