THIS YEAR: Junior Coba Canales is a terrific athlete who is gunning for a starting berth in a wide open Cougar secondary … Could develop into a key player in the defensive scheme … Is experienced and quite savvy about the game … Has excellent speed.

2003: Came off the bench in 9 of the Cougars' 10 games, tallying 15 tackles … Best showing came at Gustavus Adolphus where he recorded a season-high 4 tackles, which included one for an 8-yard loss … Gathered his first collegiate interception in the win over La Verne, returning it 17 yards … Also blocked a field goal attempt at Humboldt State … Was fourth on the team with 4 pass deflections.

BASEBALL: Also plays on the Cougar baseball team as an outfielder … In 43 games last spring, 23 of which he started, batted .313 with a team-high 5 triples, 3 doubles, and 2 home runs to go along with 15 RBIs … Also led the team with 6 stolen bases … Had 5 multi-hit games, including a trio of 3-hit contests … Was 3-for-6 with 4 runs scored in a victory over Grand Canyon.

PENN: Spent his 2002 freshman season at Penn where he appeared in 3 games, primarily on special teams, for the Ivy League champ Quakers.

HIGH SCHOOL: Lettered 3 seasons in football and 2 in baseball at Carson (Calif.) High … Named the team's defensive player of the year in 1999 when he was a member of the CIF championship team … An outstanding student, graduating 12th in a class of 553 … Was the CIF Scholar Athlete of the Year in 2001 and 2002 … Named National Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame Scholar Athlete of the Year in 2002.

PERSONAL: Born April 22, 1984, in Harbor City, Calif., to Rev. Isaac and Ritha Canales … Given name is Jacob …Has 2 brothers (Josh, who played baseball at UCLA was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers, and David, a former Cougar wide receiver who graduated from Azusa Pacific last spring).
