THIS YEAR: Senior running back Ben Buys is a hard-nosed back who is coming off 2 excellent seasons and is a prime candidate for All-American honors … Enters the season sixth on Azusa Pacific's all-time rushing chart with 1,851 yards in 16 games (115.7 avg.) … His 28 rushing TDs are second only to Christian Okoye's school record 34 … Has scored 172 points, fourth best on the Cougar's all-time list … Looking to become only the seventh Cougar ever to tally a 1,000-yard season … Is hard to bring down … Very durable … Has 2 seasons of eligibility remaining but will probably make this his final campaign since he is graduating in December. 

2003: Was putting together one of the best seasons in Azusa Pacific history until an ankle injury suffered on a career-high 83-yard run vs. La Verne ended his season … Tallied 6 100-yard rushing games in the 7 he played, including a career-high 243 yards vs. Southern Oregon, the third best single-game performance in Azusa Pacific history … Named NAIA, Football Gazette, and naiafootball.com national player of the week for the effort against Southern Oregon … Finished the season with 996 rushing yards on 186 carries (5.4 avg.) and scored 12 TDs … Had a career record-tying 4 TDs and 153 rushing yards vs. La Verne before being felled for the season early in the third quarter … Tallied at least 2 TDs in 5 games … Earned NAIA All-American honorable mention. 

2002: Figured to share rushing duties with 2 other players but burst onto the scene in his second collegiate game by rushing for 185 yards (19th best single-game effort in program history) with 4 TDs and a pair of 2-point PATs, including the game-winner, in a 44-42 triple-overtime victory at Pacific Lutheran … Went on to lead the team in rushing for the season with 855 yards, averaging 95 a game and 5.0 a carry … Scored 16 TDs, second only to Christian Okoye's single-season school-record 21 in 1986 … Also scored 4 TDs in a 35-22 victory over Humboldt State … Had 4 100-yard rushing games, including a 130-yard performance on 17 carries with 3 TDs in a 48-7 victory at Chapman. 

2001: Was forced to miss the season with a shoulder injury. 

2000: Redshirted his initial season at Azusa Pacific. 

HIGH SCHOOL: Named Rocky Mountain News all-state as a 1999 senior after setting 7 school records at Denver Christian High … Rushed for 4,580 yards in his 4-year career, scoring 356 points … Was a 3-time All-Metro League pick, including a pair of first-team honors as a junior and senior … Was also a 2-time second team selection as a linebacker … As a senior, named team MVP, Metro League Outstanding Senior Back and Rocky Mountain News Preseason Player of the Year … Was also 1 of 11 finalists for the College Football Hall of Fame Scholarship … As a 1998 junior, rushed for a school-record 1,765 yards, averaging 9.9 yards a carry while scoring 21 TDs … Also led the Crusaders in tackles … Was a 3-year letterman in basketball as well, earning all-state honorable mention and All-Metro League first team … Competed 4 seasons in track & field and was the 2000 state triple jump champion (finished second as a junior and fourth as a sophomore) … Named Denver Christian Most Valuable Senior Athlete … An outstanding student as well, was a 2-time academic all-conference pick … Was second in his class, graduating with 4.13 GPA. 

TRACK & FIELD: Participated for 3 seasons on Azusa Pacific's track & field team … Was a member of the Cougars' 2001 NAIA Championship team, competing in the triple jump where he recorded a season-best effort of 46' 0" tallied at the NAIA Outdoor Championship Meet in Abottsford, B.C. 

PERSONAL: Born June 11, 1981, in Aurora, Colo., to Duane and Debra Buys … Has 1 brother (Josh) and 1 sister (Candace) … Majoring in youth ministry and is looking to pursuit a master's degree of divinity … Likes to fish and bowl … Quite active in FCA throughout high school.
