THIS YEAR: Antonio J. “AJ” Diaz begins his first season at Azusa Pacific after spending a year at NCAA DII Western New Mexico … Brings much needed size and physicality to the Cougar front … Is likely to push for a starting role at the outset of the season … Will also compete for the Cougars’ longsnapping duties.

WESTERN NEW MEXICO: Spent the 2024 season at Western New Mexico where he was listed as a freshman tight end for the Mustangs. 

HIGH SCHOOL: Played 3 seasons of varsity football for Head Coach Anthony Lopez at Tustin (Calif.) … Competed at defensive end, tight end and long snapper for the Tillers in the Empire League … Served as team captain as a senior and helped Tustin go 10-1 and finish atop the Empire League with an undefeated campaign … Earned All-Empire League second team recognition at tight end as a senior after helping the Tillers post their best season of his varsity career … As a junior, earned all-league honorable mention at defensive end … As a senior, tallied 60 tackles, including 12 for loss to go along with 6 sacks while tallying 2 TDs on offense … Also competed 2 seasons of varsity wrestling, placing third in the Empire League at 185 pounds as a junior and second in league at 215 pounds as a senior … Earned Scholar-Athlete recognition throughout his prep career.

To Tony and Araceli Diaz … Has 2 sisters (Emery, Katelyn) … His uncle, Mike Rios, played football at Azusa Pacific … Sister Katelyn played softball at Menlo, and sister Emery played softball at Embry-Riddle … Majoring in Criminal Justice … Plans to pursue a career in law enforcement, with interest in SWAT or the California Highway Patrol … Enjoys classic car restoration, reggae music, collecting vinyl records, skimboarding and off-roading.
