Our Mission and Purpose
Mission: Azusa Pacific Sports Medicine seeks to be a community of disciples and scholars who serve the athletic department and its student-athletes by providing the highest quality of organization and administration, prevention, evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, and management of athletic injuries while being good stewards of the supplies and facilities the university has provided.
Purpose: The Sports Medicine staff is responsible for the coordination of health care to the student-athletes within the intercollegiate athletic program. Included in this responsibility are various administrative and clinical duties. Administrative duties include determination of athletic medical clearance, development and implementation of an emergency medical plan, medical record maintenance, compiling injury statistics, instituting medical coverage and staffing policy as it relates to practices and events, and budget management for the Sports Medicine Clinic (SMC). Clinically, the staff is responsible for the prevention, evaluation, management, treatment, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. This includes coordination of physician referrals, determination of participation status, and the counseling and education of student-athletes. Additionally, the Sports Medicine staff coordinates health care of student-athletes relating to general medical illnesses and conditions, as they may affect athletic participation; this involves referrals to the Student Health Center, Counseling Center, or other off-campus health care providers.

The Felix Event Center Sports Medicine Clinic on West Campus services volleyball, cross country, soccer, basketball, tennis, softball, acrobatics and tumbling, water polo, and swimming. Felix Event Center Sports Medicine Clinic
The Felix Event Center Sports Medicine Clinic (FEC-SMC) was completed in December 2000. The FEC-SMC is a state-of-the-art sports medicine clinic on West Campus that also houses the sports medicine staff offices. It features an expansive rehabilitation area with state-of-the-art modalities, rehabilitation and reconditioning equipment, a large area for taping and bandaging as well as first aid, a wet area with full-body and extremity whirlpools, and a private exam room. It is the central location for rehabilitation. The FEC-SMC services volleyball, soccer, basketball, tennis, cross country, swimming/diving, water polo, acrobatics and tumbling, and softball, as well as all out-of-season sports.

Stadium Sports Medicine Clinic
The Stadium Sports Medicine Clinic (SMC) is a full-service sports medicine clinic on East Campus. It was completed in August 2001, remodeled from the old fitness center and weight room. The Stadium SMC features a large area for taping and bandaging as well as first aid, a wet area with several full-body whirlpools, a treatment and rehabilitation area with state-of-the-art modalities, and a selection of rehabilitation equipment. It services the sports programs on East Campus, which are football, baseball, and track and field.

Graduate Intern Program
The Athletics Department at Azusa Pacific University offers four graduate intern positions within the Sports Medicine staff each year. All graduate interns are assigned positions as part of the intercollegiate sports medicine program and rotate as necessary. Graduate interns should be enrolled in an APU graduate program that fits within the time requirement of the graduate intern position and must meet application requirements. The most common programs are the M.S. in Physical Education in the Department of Exercise and Sport Science, and the M.A. in Leadership in the Department of Leadership and Organizational Psychology. Review of applications will begin in December and the positions will remain open until filled. Contracts will start August 1 each year. These are two-year appointments. Qualifications to Apply
- You must possess a bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university.
- You must be BOC certified or eligible for certification.
- You must have current CPR/First Aid certification.
- You must be eligible to meet all entrance requirements for APU’s graduate programs, or be already enrolled.
- All applicants must possess a strong Christian commitment.

Job Description and Responsibilities
Graduate interns are responsible for the daily medical coverage, travel, and health care of assigned APU intercollegiate athletic teams. Specific assignments will be determined. They will also assist with the drug testing programs, education programs, and in supervision, instruction, and evaluation of athletic training students. They are responsible for medical documentation of all evaluations, treatments, rehabilitations, and referrals. Graduate interns will also be responsible for the operation and maintenance of the Sports Medicine facilities.

Salary
Graduate interns will receive an average salary of $13,500 over the 10-month period beginning August 1 and lasting through May 31. This will be paid as an hourly wage of $10/hour. Payment will be issued bi-weekly with applicable taxes withheld. Additionally, graduate interns will receive a full-tuition waiver.
To obtain the tuition discount for summer school, special arrangements must be made. For teaching, adjunct pay is possible. For more information, see the teaching section below.
Teaching
Teaching is not required for any graduate intern; however, you can receive adjunct pay for teaching First Aid and CPR. Applicants must have their First Aid/CPR Instructor and Professional Rescuer CPR credentials.
Arrival Date
You should arrive in the Azusa area and settle into housing prior to the August 1 contract start day for graduate interns.
Summer School
Summer school courses are available and are recommended to stay on track for course sequencing as well as keeping course loads manageable during sport seasons.
Student Health Insurance and Fees
Health insurance is available through Blue Cross and allows the insured to be evaluated and treated at the APU Student Health Center at no cost. Off-campus medical services are also covered.
