Azusa Pacific University Athletics

THIS YEAR:  One of several good Cougar pole vaulters, sophomore Abba Gray is a key member of Azusa Pacific’s deep pole vaulting crew … Proves to be a great training partner for teammates Amanda Fassold, Sara Wagenveld, and McKenna Keefe … Looking to become only the third Cougar ever to eclipse 13’ … Will be a factor in the conference meet, while pursuing her first-ever qualification for the NCAAs on both the indoor and outdoor circuit.

2020 (sophomore): Appeared in 9 meets between the indoor and outdoor seasons before the COVID pandemic shut down the year … Cleared a personal-best ... Cleared 12 feet in 6 different meets, including a season-best 12’ 6” in the year’s debut meet at the Alumni Classic at Colorado Mines … Won the Rossi Relays at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps with a clearance of 12’ 1½”.

2019 (freshman):  Enjoyed an excellent rookie campaign … Cleared 12’ 8¼”, the fourth best effort in program history, to finish second at the PacWest Championship, actually tying teammate Sara Wagenveld for the best vault but surrendering the title on more misses … All told, appeared in 16 meets over the combined indoor and outdoor seasons.

HIGH SCHOOL:  Competed 4 seasons in track & field for head coach Jacy Riel at Silver Creek High in Longmont, Colo. … As a 2018 senior won the Colorado 4A state title in the pole vault with a clearance of 11’ 6” in rainy conditions in Lakewood, Colo. … Recorded the fifth best mark in the state with a school-record vault of 12’ 4” to win the Northern League title … Was slowed by ankle injuries as a 2017 junior, but finished fifth in the state meet as a 2016 sophomore with a vault of 10’ 8” … Had a season best of 11’ 3” … As a 2015 freshman finished seventh at the state meet with a vault of 10’ 9” … Served as team captain during her junior and senior seasons.

PERSONAL:  Born Aug. 1, 2000 … Parents are Michael and Dana Gray … Has one sister (Hannah) … Majoring in communications … Enjoys skiing, surfing, outdoor adventures, and creating art.
