Biography
THIS YEAR: Last year Jeff Staniland competed, this year he should control . . . Worked all summer putting on 15 pounds of muscle . . . Early on, looks to be the Cougars' top scoring threat, at the very least will be one of several go-to guys . . . Rarely turns the ball over . . . Will head an offense that should have 5 viable options on the floor at all times . . . Can distribute well and should have higher assist totals than those of a year ago.
2000: Top returning scorer . . .Enjoyed an outstanding rookie campaign as the only starting freshman point guard in the Golden State Athletic Conference . . . Averaged 10 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 3.3 assists per contest . . . One of 3 Cougars averaging double-digits in points . . . Appeared in 32 games overall, starting 23 . . . Took over the point 10 games into the season, initially filling in for an injured Isamu Nichols . . . Featured slightly better than a 2-to-1 assist to turnover ratio . . . Shot 83.9% from the foul line for the season . . . Scored a career-high 21 points in the Cougars' 95-82 GSAC clinching win at Christian Heritage . . . Set several career marks in that game that gave Azusa Pacific its eighth straight GSAC championship . . . Knocked down 15-of-18 free throws, both career-highs . . . Matched his career-high with 7 rebounds . . . Had 16 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists in the Cougars' first meeting with Westmont, a 114-106 overtime win . . . Scored 20 points and added a career-high 7 assists in a 113-68 rout of Occidental.
VENTURA HIGH: Put together an outstanding 3-year career at Ventura (Calif.) High, leaving as the program's all-time scorer with 1,499 career points (fifth in Ventura County history) . . . As a 1999 senior, led the Cougars to a 20-10 record and the CIF quarterfinals after averaging a county-best 26.5 points to go along with 6 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals . . . Named All-CIF and all-county first team . . . Selected the Channel League MVP . . . Tallied a school-record 48 points vs. Antelope Valley . . . As a 1998 junior was an all-league and all-county first team pick after averaging 21 points, 6 assists and 4 steals . . . Started as a 1997 sophomore, averaging 10 points, 5 assists and 3 steals, good enough for all-league honorable mention . . . Also lettered 2 seasons in varsity baseball (third base).
PERSONAL: Born in Dallas, Tex., to Steve and Pam Staniland . . . Is the oldest of 3 sons . . . His father played football at Southern Methodist and is currently an assistant coach at Ventura City College . . . Father played professional baseball in the St. Louis Cardinals organization . . . Grandfather played pro-ball in the Baltimore Orioles organization . . . Has not declared a major . . . Was a scholar-athletic honoree at Ventura High . . .
