Biography
THIS YEAR: Potentially one of the NAIA's top point guards, senior Larry English is expected to pick up where he left off last season, playing his best basketball as a Cougar … Is a key to the Cougars' success … Is a quick player with experience at the highest-level of NAIA basketball … Shoots well from the perimeter but is excellent at dribble penetration and can create off the dribble … Difficult to defend and is a good defensive player … Could push for national honors.
2004: Transferred to Azusa Pacific from NAIA power Barat College in Illinois … Started all 37 games, averaging 9.5 points and a GSAC best 6.1 assists … Needed time to adjust to the Cougar system but came on over the final 14 games, averaging 11.3 points and 6.3 assists … Dropped in a season-high 22 points in a regular-season finale at Point Loma Nazarene, draining a season-high 5 3-pointers, including the final one that spurred a 14-5 Cougar run to lock up the victory and clinched Azusa Pacific's 11 GSAC title in the past 12 years … Twice had 19 points in a game, first in a win at Christian Heritage and then again in the NAIA Tournament first round victory over Voorhees (S.C.) … Has 8 or more assists in a game 12 times … Led the GSAC with a 2.7 assist-to-turnover ratio … His 224 assists were the ninth-best season total in Azusa Pacific history.
BARAT: Played 2 seasons at NAIA member Barat (pronounced BEERA) College in Lake Forest, Ill., north of Chicago … Averaged 15.9 points during his 71-game career at Barat … As a 2002 freshman, averaged 14.9 points, 3.2 assists and 2.0 steals for the 33-6 Bulldogs who advanced to the NAIA semifinals in their first-ever national tournament appearance … Poured in a game-high 27 points on the strength of 8-for-10 shooting from the 3-point stripe in a first-round victory over Columbia (Mo.) … Averaged 18.8 points in 4 NAIA Tourney games … As a 2003 sophomore, averaged 17.1 points and 5.7 assists … Had a season-high 25 points vs. nationally-ranked St. Xavier (Ill.) … Made 152 treys during his 2 seasons, converting 43% of his attempts.
HIGH SCHOOL: Played 3 seasons of varsity basketball at state power Schaumburg (Ill.) High School … As a 2000 senior, earned all-state and all-area while being named the Mid-Suburban West League Player of the Year … Averaged 17 points and 7 assists … As a 1999 junior, started at the point for the 28-4 Saxons who advanced to the Class AA state semifinals … Led the Saxons to a 51-9 record over his final 2 seasons … Played for renowned Illinois prep coach Bob Williams.
