Successful Trip

APU splits on Day 2 of Sun Devil Classic, defeating Biola 15-10 and dropping to ASU 18-6.

AZUSA, Calif. – Azusa Pacific split on the second day of the Sun Devil Classic, defeating Cornerstone Cup rivals Biola 15-10 before dropping a 6-18 contest to Arizona State. The Cougars won 3 out of their 4 games over the weekend and improved to an 11-4 record.

Game One: Azusa Pacific 15, Biola 10

The Cougars came out firing in the opening period, scoring four times to take a 4-2 lead after one. Montana George opened the scoring with an early goal, and Kori Cunningham and Evelyne Prado each added first-quarter finishes. Bailey Hollick capped the period with a goal in the final minute to give Azusa Pacific momentum heading into the second.

Biola trimmed the margin early in the second, but the Cougars responded with a strong stretch. Jessie Nelson converted on a powerplay opportunity, Audrey Dexter found the back of the cage, and Hollick struck again to help Azusa Pacific carry an 8-5 advantage into halftime.

The offensive surge continued in the third. Hollick netted two more goals in quick succession, while Dexter and Montana George each added another score. Despite a push from Biola that included a powerplay conversion, Azusa Pacific maintained control with a 12-8 lead entering the fourth.

In the final frame, Annabelle Gould and Cunningham added goals before Montana George sealed the night with her third of the contest. Biola managed two late scores, but the Cougars closed out the 15-10 victory.

Hollick led the way with four goals, while Montana George recorded a hat trick and added two assists for five total points. Cunningham finished with three goals, and Dexter chipped in two. Nelson also contributed a man-up goal in the win.

Defensively, Azusa Pacific totaled 14 exclusions and six steals, while goalkeeper Daniela Herrero Miralles made nine saves in a complete-game effort to secure the victory.

Game Two: Azusa Pacific 6, Arizona State 18

Arizona State set the tone early, scoring four times in the opening period to take a 4-1 lead after one. Jessie Nelson broke through for the Cougars with a late first-quarter goal to get Azusa Pacific on the board.

The Sun Devils added four more in the second to extend the margin, but Bailey Hollick answered with a goal in the closing seconds of the half, sending Azusa Pacific into the break trailing 8-2.

The Cougars showed resilience in the third, scoring three times in the period. Montana George opened the half with a goal, Kohia Rego converted on a powerplay, and Jaeden Johnson found the back of the cage in the final minute. Despite the offensive push, Arizona State maintained control and carried a 14-5 advantage into the fourth.

Annabelle Gould added a fourth-quarter goal for Azusa Pacific, but Arizona State closed out the 18-6 result.

Nelson, Johnson and Montana George each finished with a goal and an assist, while Hollick, Rego and Gould also contributed scores. Azusa Pacific totaled 32 shots and six steals in the contest.

In goal, Kayla Tweed and Daniela Herrero Miralles combined for seven saves against a high-powered Arizona State attack.
