AZUSA, Calif. — Azusa Pacific volleyball extended its unbeaten start to the 2025 season with a straight-set sweep of Western Oregon (25–21, 25–22, 25–21) on Saturday morning at the Felix Event Center. The victory pushed them to 3–0 at the APU/CUI Tournament and was highlighted by senior libero Mia Medrano's milestone moment, as she recorded the 500th dig of her collegiate career.
The Cougars wasted no time asserting themselves in the opening set, establishing a balanced attack behind Flora Sebestyen, Sarah Wilson, and Jackie Winfield. It built a steady lead, but Western Oregon clawed back to within a few points late. With the set hanging in the balance, Medrano dug out a crucial rally to spark a transition kill for Winfield, helping the Cougars close out the opener, 25–21.
The second set featured the tightest battle of the match. The Wolves managed to force multiple ties as both teams traded points deep into the frame. Once again, APU's defense held firm. Medrano anchored the back row, making several momentum-shifting plays that not only frustrated Western Oregon's hitters but also carried personal significance, one of those digs marked the 500th of her collegiate career. The play, a full-extension effort to keep a ball alive off a sharp-angle attack, drew a roar from the Cougar bench and cheers from the home crowd. They rode that surge to score the final three points of the set, taking it 25–22 and seizing a commanding two-set lead.
In the third, it played with the composure of a team that has already shown it knows how to close. Carroll continued to spread the offense effectively, Sebestyen and Wilson provided reliable finishing touches at the net, and the it maintained control from start to finish. A late Wolves push was quickly turned away as Amanda Albertini capped the match with a kill, sealing another 25–21 result and the sweep.
