Ademola's Brace Not Enough for Cougars

Cougars drop nonconference game 5-2 to Sea Lions

AZUSA, Calif. – The Cougars' opening 10 minutes of the nonconference matchup against the Point Loma Sea Lions pointed to a night in favor of APU. Leke Ademola struck twice, his brace giving him three goals on the season and putting the Cougars up 2-0 early in the first half. But that would be the high point of the evening. Point Loma responded with five unanswered goals, turning the game on its head and defeating APU 5-2.

Ademola opened the scoring just two minutes in. A Sea Lion foul allowed the Cougars a dangerous offensive free kick. Osmin Carranza got a head on a curling ball sent in from Kaleb Abara, forcing the Sea Lions' goalkeeper to make an awkward save. Ademola pounced on the second chance that hung in the air and headed the ball into an open net. Six minutes later, he doubled the lead, beating his defender to a perfectly-timed through ball from Orlando Valencia-Jimenez.

The early cushion didn't hold, however, as Point Loma responded with three goals before halftime, shifting momentum away from the home side, before running away with the game with two more insurance goals in the 2nd half.

Despite being outscored the rest of the way, APU had three moments that nearly flipped the script: a missed penalty kick that could have cut into the deficit, a goal controversially called back for a foul, and in the 81st minute, Andrew Gomez had everyone holding their breath when his shot sliced just inches wide of the post.
