Historic Step Forward: NCAA Recommends Acrobatics & Tumbling for Championship Status

Azusa Pacific Celebrates Milestone in Sport’s Evolution.

AZUSA, Calif. — The Azusa Pacific Acrobatics & Tumbling program is proud to join the National Collegiate Acrobatics & Tumbling Association (NCATA) in celebrating a historic milestone for the sport. On Thursday, the NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics officially recommended that all three NCAA divisions sponsor legislation to establish a National Collegiate Championship in Acrobatics & Tumbling.

This monumental step comes as the result of years of advocacy, growth, and excellence across the sport. If adopted, the first official NCAA Championship for Acrobatics & Tumbling would be held in Spring 2027.

"This is a monumental moment for our sport and for the incredible student-athletes who have poured their hearts into it," said Azusa Pacific Head Coach Reigh Lea Moore. "Our team, alumni, and staff are honored to be a part of this journey, and we're excited for what's to come."

What Comes Next:

  • Each NCAA division is expected to sponsor legislation during its 2025-26 legislative cycle.

  • Proposals will be voted on at the 2026 NCAA Convention in Washington, D.C..

  • An NCAA Acrobatics and Tumbling Committee would be established in January 2026 to prepare for the 2027 championship.

The recommendation is contingent on final confirmation of sport sponsorship and participation numbers for the Spring 2025 season, which will be verified this summer.

Azusa Pacific, a proud and pioneering program in Acrobatics & Tumbling, will continue to play a key role in building momentum toward full championship status. As one of the earliest adopters of the sport, APU remains committed to advancing opportunities for women and growing visibility for Acrobatics & Tumbling at the highest level.
