Cougars Edged by Jessup in Four-Set Road Battle

Wilson and Winfield combine for 30 kills, but APU falls 3–1 to the Warriors in Rocklin.

ROCKLIN, Calif. — Azusa Pacific came out swinging Friday afternoon at Warrior Arena, pushing Jessup in several tightly contested sets before falling 3–1 (23–25, 21–25, 25–19, 19–25) in PacWest play. Despite a balanced offensive effort and strong defensive showing, the Cougars (7–11, 2–5 PacWest) couldn't overcome the Warriors' .307 hitting percentage and six total blocks.

The first set was a back-and-forth battle featuring six ties and multiple lead changes. Sarah Wilson tallied five kills and Flora Sebestyen added three more as APU erased a late deficit to tie the score at 23–23. However, Jessup closed out the final two points to edge the Cougars 25–23.

In the second frame, it again started strong, using kills from Wilson and Jackie Winfield to keep pace early. The Cougars trailed just 13–12 midway through, but Jessup strung together a late 6–2 run behind steady attacking to pull away for a 25–21 win and a 2–0 match lead.

The third set saw the Cougars' best stretch of the night. Their offense clicked as Sebestyen hit .667 and Winfield chipped in five kills. Brooklyn Kostoff orchestrated a .316 team hitting percentage in the frame while Mia Medrano anchored the back row with timely digs. APU built a 17–10 lead and never looked back, taking the set 25–19 to extend the match.

The Warriors responded in set four, using a quick start and a 5–1 closing run to secure the match. Wilson and Katelyn Sonnier tried to rally the Cougars late, but Jessup's block proved decisive in a 25–19 clincher.
