Box Score WAIPI'O, HI— Azusa Pacific blanked Hawai'i Pacific 1-0 on Saturday night, tying the program record (set in 2001 and 2013) with its ninth straight shutout. Freshmen
Mayilen Salazar and
Camila Hernandez connected for the goal, with Salazar threading a precise ball into the box that Hernandez poked past the keeper. With the result, the Cougars haven't conceded a goal in over 13 hours of game time and remain unbeaten for over 5 weeks.Â
The breakthrough came in the 61st minute off a corner kick. Salazar received the ball to her feet off a corner from Alexis Fuller and beat her defender, taking the ball to the byline and slipping it to a wide open Hernandez, who slotted it in off a toe poke. The finish stood as the game winner. The two freshmen combine for 8Â points so far through ten games, with Hernandez claiming 4 with 2 goals, and Salazar finding the other half with a goal and 2 assists.
APU controlled the run of play, outshooting HPU 16-4 (shots on goal 8-3) and earning a 9-0 edge in corner kicks, including the service that led to the goal. Alexia Muniz recorded three saves to secure the clean sheet, while Jada Preston, Sophia Emerson, Anjolie Mayeda, Madison Woodward, and Alexis Fuller held down the back line to limit dangerous chances. Muniz came up big in the 73rd minute, halting HPU's most threatening attack of the night when she redirected a lofted shot and secured it, denying any second look from the swarming Sharks.
