Cougars Fall In Championship Game

Azusa Pacific made it to the championship game of the PacWest tournament, but fell to Concordia by a 10-2 final.

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. - Azusa Pacific softball made it to the Championship game of the conference tournament for the second year in a row, but was defeated by Concordia by a final score of 10-2. The Cougars recorded nine hits in the contest, while Aly Montesino recorded a home run, going 2-for-3 with two RBI. 

How it Happened: The Golden Eagles put up two runs in the first inning to take an early lead over Azusa Pacific. The Cougars struck back in the second inning when Montesino launched her ninth home run of the season to cut the deficit in half at 2-1. 

From the fourth to seventh inning, Concordia posted eight unanswered runs to take a 10-1 lead. The Cougars got a run back in the bottom of the seventh inning when Montesino singled to right field to score Ally Chin, making the score 10-2, which was the final in today's game. 

By the Numbers: The Cougars end the regular season 30-19 with a 19-9 conference record. Bella Fraser led the team in batting average, hitting .340 on the year, while Caitlin DeCanio hit .333. Azusa Pacific led the PacWest in hitting with a .285 team average, a 1.83 ERA as a pitching staff, and a .974 FLD%. The team launched 35 long balls on the year, recording 381 hits and the pitching staff recorded 278 strikeouts, while Katie Korstrom held a 1.41 ERA and Sydnie Sahhar had a 1.91 ERA on the year. 

Playoff Picture: Azusa Pacific currently ranks ninth in the latest West Regional rankings. After picking up two more wins at the conference tournament, the Cougars will find out their postseason position during the selection show happening on Monday, May 6th at 7:00 a.m. (PT).
