BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Azusa Pacific was eliminated from the West Regional tournament after falling to top seed and host Western Washington 3-0 on Friday afternoon. Katie Korstrom was 2-for-3 in the contest, making that a 5-for-6Â day for her at the plate. Sommer Quinones and Jaelah Burrell each also picked up a hit in the contest.Â
How it Happened: Western Washington jumped ahead early, hitting a two out RBI double to go up 1-0 in the first inning. The Cougars saw a solid scoring opportunity in their half of the second when Korstrom and Quinones put together back-to-back singles, but nothing came from it.Â
The Vikings put another run on the board in the fourth followed by another in the fifth to take a 3-0 lead over Azusa Pacific. The Cougars went down in order in the sixth and seventh innings, falling to Western Washington in an NCAA West Regional elimination game, concluding their 2024 season.Â
By the Numbers: The Cougars finished the season with a 31-21 overall record, making their third consecutive postseason appearance. Korstrom led the Cougars offensively with a .330 average while Bella Fraser finished the year hitting .317 and Caitlin DeCanio hitting .312. Azusa Pacific totaled 398 hits on the year with 108 extra base hits, 37 of those being home runs with Aly Montesino and DeCanio each having 10. On the mound, Korstrom collected 18 wins on the year with 137 strikeouts over 169.1 innings pitched. Sahhar also gathered a 1.90 ERA with 48 strikeouts. Defensively, the Cougars posted a .975 FLD% on the year.
The Cougars graduate nine seniors who include Korstrom, Burrell, Sahhar, Mia Alvarez, Ally Chin, Kinsey Erickson, Aleah Delgado, Aly Montesino and Felicia De La Torre. All nine of these seniors have been key contributors to not only Azusa Pacific's success this season, but their success over the past four years, including three consecutive West Regional appearances and winning 118 games. Although head coach Carrie Webber is losing key players in this years senior class, she will look towards her 13 returning players (including two-time All-Region performer DeCanio, 2024 Second Team All-PacWest selection Fraser and 2024 Third Team All-PacWest honoree Quinones) that will create another exciting year on the field for Azusa Pacific softball in 2025.
