SAN RAFAEL, Calif. - The No. 2 seed Azusa Pacific defeated No. 3 Hawai'i Hilo in the opening round of the conference tournament on Wednesday, 4-2. Katie Korstrom threw her 22nd complete game and 17th win of the year only giving up four hits while recording nine strikeouts. Bella Fraser and Sierra Sandoval both turned in multi-hit games while Korstrom also had two RBI on the day.
How it Happened: It took no time for the Cougar offense to get going as a walk from Ally Chin followed by a double from Caitlin DeCanio put two runners on for Aly Montesino. Montesino then hit a shot that got past the Hawai'i Hilo first baseman, allowing Chin to score. Fraser singled to third to load the bases for Korstrom who delivered a two RBI single up the middle to give Azusa Pacific a 3-0 lead.
The scoring did not stop there as Sommer Quinones reached on a fielder's choice that scored Fraser to send the Cougars into the second inning up by four.
Hilo got a run back in the second and sixth innings to cut the deficit to 4-2.
Azusa Pacific saw some solid scoring opportunities, but were unable to produce any more runs after the first. Posting a four spot was good enough for Korstrom and the Cougar defense though who limited the Vulcans to just four hits and stranded three on base.
Hawai'i Hilo went down in order in the seventh to give Azusa Pacific the opening game victory by a final of 4-2, advancing them to the semi-finals of the PacWest tournament tomorrow against No. 1 seed Concordia.
