Game Recap: Softball |

Series Win Secured

With a split of today's doubleheader against Chaminade, Azusa Pacific softball secured the series victory.

AZUSA, Calif. - Azusa Pacific dropped the first game of the doubleheader to Chaminade before salvaging the split and earning the series win with a 7-2 victory over the Silverswords in game two. The Cougars collected 24 hits across both games, with five different players having multi-hit games. Katie Korstrom and Sydnie Sahhar both threw complete games, combining for six strikeouts.

The Cougars are now 35-6 all-time against the Silverswords and 17-1 playing at home at the Cougar Softball Complex.

Game One: Azusa Pacific 1, Chaminade 3

Chaminade did all the scoring they needed to in the third, pushing across three runs to take an early 3-0 lead. The Cougars got one back in the fourth when Korstrom led off the inning with a triple, followed by a double from Bella Fraser to score Korstrom to cut the deficit to 3-1. They were able to get the bases loaded with one out, but the Silverswords worked their way out of it defensively to keep a two run advantage.

Despite getting runners in scoring position four times and a runner to third three times throughout the game, the Cougars were unable to push across another run, falling to Chaminade 3-1 in the first game.

After allowing three earned runs in the second inning, Korstrom only allowed two hits over the final five innings of work.

Game Two: Azusa Pacific 7, Chaminade 2

Chaminade got ahead early, scoring a run off a walk and a double in the first to take a 1-0 lead. Azusa Pacific then took their first lead of the day in their half of the second. Fraser, Sierra Sandoval and Kinsey Erickson had back-to-back-to back singles to tie the game at 1-1. A passed ball then scored Sandoval and a single from Sommer Quinones got Erickson across to take a 3-1 lead.

The Cougars added insurance in the fourth when Jaelah Burrell reached on an error and Alvarez singled, putting runners at second and third for Ally Chin who singled to left field to give Azusa Pacific a 4-1 lead. It was then Caitlin DeCanio's turn as she singled through the left side to score Alvarez, extending the lead to 5-2.

Chaminade cut into the deficit, collecting a run in the fifth, making the score 5-2, but the Cougars responded in their half of the sixth. Chin led off with a single followed by a double from Korstrom to put runners at second and third for Fraser who singled to score Chin, giving the Cougars a 6-2 lead. Sandoval then hit a SAC fly to score pinch runner Hailey Burns to extend the lead to 7-2, which was the final score in the second game on Tuesday evening.

Sahhar went the distance, throwing her first complete game of the season and earning her first win. She struck out five while only walking three.

Up Next: The Cougars will be back in action on Saturday, April 6th when they host Concordia for a battle between the first and second place teams in the PacWest standings. First pitch will be at 12:00 p.m. at the Cougar Softball Complex.
