Game Recap: Softball |

Long Ball Propels Cougars to Game Two Victory

Azusa Pacific softball split its doubleheader at Biola on Monday, defeating the Eagles in the second game via three home runs.

LA MIRADA, Calif. - Azusa Pacific fell 1-0 in the first game before taking down the Eagles 3-1 by solo home runs from Mia Alvarez, Bella Fraser and Katie Korstrom in the second game. Korstrom also went the distance in the circle for game two, throwing all seven innings while only allowing one earned run and striking out four. Despite the loss in game one, Felicia De La Torre only allowed one run off three hits and struck out four over six innings of work.

GAME ONE: Azusa Pacific 0, Biola 1

It was a pitchers duel in game one as De La Torre allowed one earned run through six innings pitched, though offensively the Cougars could not get a runner past second.

In Biola's half of the fourth, a leadoff triple and sacrifice fly allowed the Eagles to go ahead 1-0. Azusa Pacific saw their best opportunity in their half of the fifth. Fraser walked then proceeded to steal second, but two strikeouts and a line out to left field ended their opportunity.

Aly Montesino collected the only two hits for Azusa Pacific in game one as the Cougars ended up falling to Biola by a final of 1-0.

GAME TWO: Azusa Pacific 3, Biola 1

The Cougars wasted no time in the second game as Mia Alvarez launched her third home run of the year over the center field wall on the first pitch of the game. Azusa Pacific held a 1-0 lead until the third inning when the Eagles tied it up 1-1.

The Cougars took the lead right back in their half of the fifth inning when Fraser hit her first collegiate home run to center field to take a 2-1 advantage. With two outs in the fifth, it was Korstrom's turn as she blasted her first home run of the year to left field to give Azusa Pacific a 3-1 lead.

That lead would hold as Korstrom threw three more scoreless innings, securing a 3-1 win, their first PacWest win of the season.

By the Numbers: With the three home runs today, the Cougars have a PacWest leading 13 home runs as a team. Azusa Pacific collected eight hits in the second game, with Alvarez, Fraser and Aleah Delgado each having two. In the circle, Korstrom currently leads the conference with a .32 ERA after picking up her fifth win of the season and De La Torre ranks tenth in the conference with a 1.66 ERA.

Up Next: The Cougars will travel to the Bay Area this week, facing Menlo on Wednesday, March 6th at 12:00 & 2:00 p.m.
