GLENDORA, Calif. - Azusa Pacific came up just short on Saturday morning, with #21 Brown holding on for an 8-6 road victory. With the loss, the Cougars are 12-10 overall.
Laia Marsinach Ortega had a team-high two goals, while
Kaelene De Bie and
Alex Airitam each recorded two steals defensively. Airitam was in between the posts for the Cougars, and she tallied a season-high 12 saves to keep Azusa Pacific within striking distance throughout.
How It Happened: It was a slow-paced affair throughout, with goals seemingly coming at a premium for both sides early. Following a four goal on four shots game yesterday,
Alexandra Akritidou opened the scoring with a goal with 4:56 to play in the opening period. Brown would take the lead to end the first period, as the Bears equalized at 1-1 with 3:35 on the clock, and they took their first lead just before the end of the period with a last-second goal to make it 2-1.
Azusa Pacific would regain the lead with a pair of goals in the second quarter, however, the Bears would once again strike just before the buzzer to tie it up at 3-3 heading into the intermission.
Much like the first period, the third saw neither side score through the first three minutes of playing. Brown would get on the board first in the second half, regaining a lead at 4-3 with 4:40 to go.
Montana White would level things for the Cougars as she scored with just over a minute and a half left in the third, and the two sides entered the final period in a 4-4 deadlock.
While the Cougars were held scoreless for over five minutes in the fourth, the Bears put three shots into the back of the cage to take control with a 7-4 advantage with 3:17 to play.
Rachel Ahumada broke the scoreless drought for the Cougars to make it 7-5 with 2:50 to play, but Brown maintained a cushion of two or more goals for the remainder of the contest.
Up Next: The Cougars will be back to conference play next Saturday, when they visit Santa Clara on April 6. The game will start at 1:00 pm.
