TURLOCK, Calif. – Azusa Pacific's stay at the 2024 Tournament of Champions hosted by Stanislaus State came to an early end as they dropped a 3-2 decision to the Cal Poly Humboldt Lumberjacks before rain wiped out their final scheduled game of the weekend against San Francisco State.
How It Happened: The Cougars were chasing the game the whole way, allowing an unearned run in the top of the first thanks to a pair or errors. The good news was that the old saying about turnabout being fair play aided them in the home half of the first, with Mia Alvarez getting all the way to third base on a fielding error and coming around to score on an Aly Montesino single to tie the game.
The Lumberjacks responded immediately with back-to-back doubles leading off the second to retake the lead. This time, the advantage would hold until the bottom of the fourth, when Caitlin DeCanio blasted a 2-2 offering over the fence in left to again knot the game up at 2-2. Humboldt would regain the lead with a two-out hit in the fifth, however, and the Cougars' best chance to tie the game again went by the wayside when they were unable to take advantage of a bases-loaded, one-out situation in the bottom of the fifth.
By the Numbers: Izzy Rivera had the other two hits in the game for the Cougars, the only player with multiple hits for Azusa Pacific on the day. Felicia De La Torre allowed just one hit while striking out two in three innings out of the bullpen. DeCanio's home run was her team-leading seventh on the season. The Cougars' end no conference play with a 5-7 mark against the CCAA.
Up Next: Azusa Pacific (16-11, 7-3 PacWest) return home for an always-critical doubleheader against Concordia next Saturday. First pitch from the Cougar Softball Complex is scheduled for 12:00 noon.
