Azusa Pacific earned a pair of wins on Saturday to finish with a 3-1 record at the Claremont Convergence, as the Cougars beat Caltech by a 17-1 score to start the day, and then ended the weekend with a 17-4 victory over Cal State East Bay. Azusa Pacific is now 12-8 this season, and the Cougars have won 10 of their last 12 games.
Azusa Pacific 17, Caltech 1
Alexandra Akritidou opened the scoring on the day for the Cougars, as she delivered a goal just over 23 seconds into the game. Caltech would tie it up with a goal at 6:50 in the first quarter, but that would be the Beavers only goal of the contest. Azusa Pacific would finish the first with nine goals, which is the Cougars' season-high for a single quarter.
The Cougars would add to the lead with three goals in the second and third quarters, and two goals in the fourth.
Mica Schiavone scored a game-high four goals, while
Skylar Ford and
Laia Marsinach Ortega each turned in hat-tricks. Akritidou and
Catherine Ahumada also turned in multi-goal games with two apiece, and Akritidou dished out three assists.
Daniela Herrero Miralles was the winning goalie, playing the first two quarters and registering three saves.
Alex Airitam took over in the third quarter, and she finished with four saves.
Azusa Pacific 17, Cal State East Bay 4
The Cougars carried their momentum from the morning right into the afternoon, as Azusa Pacific opened up a 6-0 lead in the first quarter over East Bay. The Pioneers got on the board with a goal at 6:48 on the clock in the second quarter, and they added two more before halftime. On the other end of the pool, the Cougars matched with three goals of their own, and a 7-2 lead was the closest the game would be.Â
After a 1-1 third quarter, the Cougars closed the game out by holding the Pioneers scoreless in the fourth, while putting seven goals into the back of the cage over the final eight minutes of play.
Schiavone once again led the way offensively, finishing with a season-high five goals. Schiavone, who was named the GCC Player of the Week last week, has scored three or more goals in seven games so far.
Montana White scored two goals and had two assists for the Cougars. Herrero Miralles once again earned the win in goal, registering four saves over the first half. Airitam had three saves in the third and fourth.
For the seventh time this season, the Cougars finished with a shooting percentage above .500, as Azusa Pacific was 17-for-29 (.586).Â
