Softball Splits With #9 Cal State San Marcos

Azusa Pacific softball split its doubleheader at #9 Cal State San Marcos today.

SAN MARCOS, Calif. –  In an all-Cougar showdown on the diamond, Azusa Pacific held their own against 9th-ranked Cal State San Marcos, getting a 1-0 shutout win in game one before dropping the nightcap 4-1.

Game One:  Azusa Pacific 1, Cal State San Marcos 0

Game one was all about Cougar starting pitcher Katie Korstrom.  The senior singlehandedly won the opener, tossing a complete game shutout, allowing just four hits while striking out five.  Meanwhile, with the offense limited to just four hits themselves, it was Korstrom's second at-bat of the contest that proved the critical one.  After falling behind 0-2, Korstrom continued to battle, working the count full and fouling off five pitches, including three in a row with a 3-2 count.  On the 11th pitch of the at-bat, Korstrom got her bat on a breaking ball that didn't break and drove to the opposite field, over the right-center fence to provide the only run of the contest.

The pitcher would work her way out of a pair of jams in the latter innings, as Cal State San Marcos left two runners stranded on base in both the sixth and seventh.  Azusa Pacific went on to win the first game of the doubleheader 1-0.

Game Two:  Cal State San Marcos 4, Azusa Pacific 1

All the scoring in the second game occurred in the first inning.  With one out, Hailey Burns reached base on an infield single.  Aly Montesino then followed with an RBI hit to give the visiting Cougars a short-lived lead.  But San Marcos erupted for four runs on three hits in the bottom half of the inning, with six of the first seven batters reaching base, highlighted by a pair of two-run doubles.

That would be the last hit San Marcos would get in the game, but it held up, as the Cougars were unable to pull any closer despite collecting eight hits in the game themselves.  Burns had a pair of infield singles for the offense, while Felicia De La Torre and Sydnie Sahhar combined to throw 6.2  innings in relief without allowing a hit. The Cougars ended up falling to the home Cougars 4-1 in the second contest.

Up Next:  Azusa Pacific (15-9, 7-3 PacWest) head up to Turlock for the annual Tournament of Champions hosted by Stanislaus State next weekend to play four games against CCAA opposition over two days.  First up will be a meeting with the host Warriors, scheduled for Friday at 11:30 a.m.  Over the rest of the weekend, the Cougars will also face Cal State East Bay, Cal Poly Humboldt, and San Francisco State.
