AZUSA, Calif. - Azusa Pacific came up short in both games on Saturday to wrap up play in the CUI Kickoff Classic. The Cougars dropped the first game against Cal State East Bay 6-0 before falling in the second game to Cal State San Marcos 4-0. Ally Chin and Sommer Quinones collected a hit in both games, while Kinsey Erickson went 2-for-2 in the first game.Â
GAME ONE: Cal State East Bay 6, Azusa Pacific 0
The Pioneers got on the board early, scoring two runs in the first inning off a home run. In the second inning, the visiting team maintained the offensive momentum, putting up a three spot to take a 5-0 lead.
The Cougars had an opportunity to score in the bottom of the second when Bella Fraser tripled to right center, but the Cougars were caught at home attempting to score to end the inning.
In the fourth, Azusa Pacific was able to get a runner to third, but a strikeout ended the inning to keep the score 5-0. Cal State East Bay picked up another run in the sixth inning to take a 6-0 lead, which was the final score in game one.
Freshman Mia Castillo threw 5.2 innings in relief, only giving up one run (unearned) and struck out two.
GAME TWO: Cal State San Marcos 4, Azusa Pacific 0
Azusa Pacific had an opportunity to score early when two singles from Chin and Aly Montesino and a walk from Quinones loaded the bases, but the visiting Cougars were able to work out of the inning with a strikeout.
Cal State San Marcos scored two in the top of the third to take a lead, while the home Cougars were able to get Mia Alvarez to third in the bottom of the inning, but she was left stranded after a ground out.
Cal State San Marcos got two more runs in the fifth and seventh inning to take a 4-0 lead as Azusa Pacific was unable to produce any runs for the remainder of the game, falling 4-0 to close out the weekend.
Azusa Pacific had five hits in the contest, all from different players while Felicia De La Torre collected six strikeouts in her first outing for the Cougars.
